What do you wish you'd known when you were starting out?

I would like to say, keep networking and have a full psychological preparation for transition from a student to a worker. Networking is a good way to promote sociability, you can be familiar with colleagues faster. Also, fully psychological preparation can make yourself adapt to the working environment faster.

Best advice you've ever received from alumni or professionals or professors?

In the first semester of coming to Syracuse University, I met a person who had just got a job through Whitman’s career fair. I asked her how to be like her. She answered positively,

just to be confident.

Honestly, in my opinion, most international students are too modest and not good at expressing themselves. we need to show our confidence to the interviewer and our strong desire to join the company.

Something you didn’t know when starting your job search/ career that you wish you did?

Whitman’s career service office is an excellent place. Never stop to drop by.

They will give you so many hints to help you find a job and revise your resume. Make full use of this excellent resource.

Biggest challenge for you when applying for a job as an international student?

Cultural Shock: It is undeniable that I am an international student, come from a different country, and have different cultures. but what I do is be myself. I always catch every opportunity to communicate with others.

Language Barrier: Compared to many people whose first language is English, it is difficult for me to express my thoughts completely. From the first day I came to the US, I never stop to explain my thoughts and feelings even if I cannot find accurate words. Also, participate in a lot of campus activities.

Best advice you would give to international students who want to search for internships in the US ?

  • Know yourself, know what you want to do.

  • Organize a nice and clean resume

  • Keep a high GPA

  • Balance your working experience and leadership activities

  • Know the company you want to go

The most useful soft skill you think is necessary for entry-level in job searching?

Excel.

Just for the type of work I do. In the daily auditing work, the most long-term use is Excel. New hires who have just joined will have to deal with a lot of data, and the proficient use helps you work more efficiently. Of course, you need to learn more later, such as VBA and data analysis skills

The best advice you can give international students in networking in the US?

Never stop networking.

As I said, networking is a good way to promote sociability. LinkedIn is the most useful app. Try to create a LinkedIn account to complete your information as much as possible. Let more people know you.
